The season of Advent begins on Sunday. Four weeks of "preparation"! Messages for the first three weeks are going to come from the book of Isaiah - this coming week (November 30), the text is Isaiah 64:1-9 - it begins like this:
"Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!
We all have "if only's" in life - if only we made more money, or had a boyfriend, or hadn't said that. If only we were taller, prettier, smarter, more patient . . .
Isaiah is looking for God to split open heaven and come to earth and make everything right again. Of course, "make it right" often means, "let my will be done!" But what if God had actually answered Isaiah's prayer? What if heaven actually did open, and what if God actually did come to earth?
That's exactly what Christians believe happened with the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. If only the thing I wish for would come true! But ... what if it has?
Let me know if you have any thoughts about this text from Isaiah . . . Peace.
